Stuck Door Latch on a Wolf Oven in Milton After a Clean Cycle
The door stays locked until the control sees the cavity fall below a set temperature, so a lock that persists long after the cycle ended is normal. It is a fault when the panel has gone dark, or when the cavity is cold and the latch has still not released.
The cycle ran overnight, the kitchen has cooled off, the cavity smells faintly of burnt sugar and the door will not open. The handle moves and the door does not. Somewhere on the panel a small padlock symbol is still lit, and nothing you press changes it.
Almost nobody runs self-clean on a quiet week. It gets run before the week that needs the oven, which is exactly why a locked door feels like a disaster rather than an inconvenience. The good news is that the first explanation is usually the boring one. The less good news is that this cycle has a habit of finding whatever was already tired inside the appliance.
The cool-down is part of the cycle
The door is not stuck. It is being held. The control keeps the latch engaged until it sees the cavity temperature drop below a threshold it is watching for, and that moment arrives well after the heating phase has finished and the display has stopped counting. A door still locked long after the cycle ended is ordinary behaviour.
While you wait, watch rather than intervene. Is the display lit and responsive. Is a cooling fan still audible. Is any code showing. Note all three, because they are the difference between a story a technician can use and one they cannot.
Waiting stops being the answer at a specific point: the door glass is cool to the touch, the cavity is no longer warm, and the padlock indicator is still on. Or the panel has gone dark entirely, which is a different fault and gets its own section below.
The Milton habit worth changing is the timing. Run the cycle on a week when nothing depends on the oven the following day.
Check whether the oven still has power at all
Two faults look identical from the front of the kitchen and are not related. A latch that will not release still has a lit panel and a control that answers when you touch it. An oven that has lost power has a dead display and a latch frozen wherever it happened to be. The second is usually a tripped breaker or an opened thermal fuse.
Go and look at the breaker. If it has tripped, reset it once, and treat that as a test rather than as a repair — if the panel comes back and the latch releases, the fact that it tripped at all is the finding, and it needs explaining.
A thermal fuse is a one-shot safety device. It opens permanently and has to be replaced; there is no reset on it, and it did not fail so much as do exactly what it exists to do. Something upstream of it got hotter than the design allows, and until that is understood the fuse is a symptom.
None of which turns repeated breaker resets into a plan. Each reset re-energises a circuit that has already reported a problem, inside an appliance that draws serious current.
Motor, switch, and a control that wants agreement
The latch is driven by a small motor and watched by a position switch. The control will not release the door until that switch confirms the latch has physically moved to where it was told to go. That gives you two quite different failures wearing the same face: a latch that never moved, and a latch that moved but was not believed.
You can often tell them apart by ear. Silence at the moment the oven should be unlocking suggests the motor is not being driven or has failed. A motor you can hear run, stop, and run again while the padlock stays lit suggests the movement is happening and the confirmation is not arriving.
There is a third possibility after a very hot cycle, which is mechanical. Latch travel can be fouled by carbon and ash, or the assembly can bind while everything is still at temperature and free up as it cools.

Codes that return after a power cycle
A fault code names what the control observed, not the component that broke. In a locked-door situation it generally means the control asked for a latch position and did not receive confirmation within the time it allows. That is a description of a disagreement, not an accusation against a part.
Write it down before you cut power. Clearing the code destroys the only evidence anyone has, and “there was a code but I did not note it” is a genuinely expensive sentence.
Then read the behaviour after the reset. A code that clears and stays clear suggests a one-off event. A code that reappears immediately means the condition is still present, and the oven should not be run again until someone has looked at it.
The other things that fail during self-clean
Self-clean takes the cavity far above any temperature you would ever cook at, and that is precisely why marginal components choose that hour to give up. Bake and broil elements, control relays and door seals are the usual collateral. A door that eventually releases perfectly and then bakes unevenly is not a coincidence — it is the second half of the same event.
Fine grey ash on the cavity floor is normal and wipes out with a damp cloth. Some discolouration of racks is normal too, and if your use and care guide says to take the racks out before the cycle, take them out.
Door seals are worth a look while you have the door open. The cycle stiffens gaskets over time, and a hardened seal shows up later as heat escaping around the top of the door.
Whether to run self-clean at all
An honest position: the feature works, and it is hard on the appliance. It does not really break things so much as locate whatever was already marginal and finish it off. That is a fair trade on an oven in good order and a poor one on an appliance that is old, heavily used, or needed tomorrow evening.
Manual cleaning is a real alternative rather than a consolation prize. A warm cavity, a plastic scraper and a non-caustic cleaner will handle most of what accumulates, and it does not put the whole appliance through a thermal stress test.
When to stop and call
Three things end the waiting. A burning electrical smell. A breaker that trips a second time. Or a door still locked when the cavity is properly cold and the cycle finished long ago.
Do not force it. The latch is not built to be overridden by hand, and levering at it damages the assembly and frequently the door as well, which converts a latch repair into a door repair. Nothing gained is worth that.
