Delayed Lighting on a Wolf Burner in Milton and What It Means

A Wolf burner that lights late with a thump has been releasing unburned gas before it catches, which makes it more pressing than a burner that never lights. Check cap register, blocked ports and electrode position first, and stop at the gas path.

There is a sound a lot of Milton kitchens have learned to ignore. You turn the knob, the igniter ticks two, three, four times, and then comes a soft flat thump — felt as much as heard — and the ring is alight. Everyone gets used to it; somebody in the house even starts standing back before using that particular burner. It is the one ignition symptom that gets tolerated for months, and it is the one that should not be.

Before any of the rest: if there is a gas smell that does not disperse with a window open, get everyone out and telephone the gas utility from outside the house. Not us, not later. That instruction has no exceptions and nothing on this page competes with it.

Start by finding out how much of the range is affected

Delayed lighting is usually one burner. Work out which, and whether any others are affected, because the two answers lead to different places. A single slow position is that burner’s own hardware — cap, ports, electrode. Every position lighting late points somewhere shared: the supply into the house, the pressure behind it, or the module driving the sparks.

Hearing the tick answers only half the question. It confirms the spark side is alive and receiving instructions. Whether fuel is arriving, and arriving where the spark actually is, is a separate matter with its own checks, because gas travels to the ports silently and leaves no evidence you can hear.

Set down a few specifics before touching anything. Which burner. Whether the delay happens from cold or only when the top has been in use for a while. Whether it is worse on the low settings than on high, since a burner that lights promptly wide open and hesitates at simmer is telling a slightly different story. And whether the extraction was running, which sounds like an odd question until you have stood in a house on Brush Hill that has been sealed up tight since December, with a wide hood on its highest setting pulling at a flame that was already struggling to establish.

There is one symptom that does not belong in this list at all: ticking that continues with every knob turned off. That is a distinct fault with its own section below.

Seating, debris and the boil-over nobody mentioned

Most delays are mechanical, and most of the mechanical ones come down to something physically in the way. The cap has to sit exactly where it was designed to sit, the ports have to be open, and neither of those conditions survives an enthusiastic autumn of cooking without being checked once in a while.

A cap sitting slightly high — resting on a fragment of hardened spill, or dropped back a few degrees off its register after a wash — moves the flame path away from the electrode. The gas still leaves the head, just not in the concentration the spark needs at the moment the spark happens. Add half a second of hunting to every light and you have manufactured a delay out of a cleaning error.

Boil-overs do the rest. Stock, milk and anything sweet run into the ports and bake hard the next time the burner runs, and the ports that block first are frequently the ones nearest the electrode, where the flame is supposed to catch and travel round. Warm water, a soft brush and a wooden toothpick are the right tools. Anything steel, including the paperclip that is always within reach, can widen a port or turn its edge, and that burner will never light or burn evenly again.

If everything has just been washed, water is the likely culprit and patience is the whole repair. Moisture sits inside the head and across the ceramic at the base of the electrode, out of reach of any towel, and suppresses ignition until it has gone completely. No drying time is worth printing here, because it depends entirely on how soaked it got and how warm the room is. Leave it well beyond the point where you think it must be dry.

Reading the spark you can see

Switch the kitchen lights off and watch. A sharp blue-white snap, jumping a short gap between the electrode tip and the nearest metal of the head, hitting the same spot pulse after pulse — that is what a good one looks like. Compare the burner that hesitates against one that lights immediately, and the difference is often visible in a few seconds.

The tell-tale faults are three. An electrode knocked out of position throws its spark at a grate or the cooktop surface, and the gas never sees any of that energy. A hairline crack in the white ceramic sleeve lets the pulse leak into the metal below before it reaches the tip — normal noise, no useful spark, worse in damp weather and reported as intermittent for that reason. And carbonised residue bridging the gap offers an easier path than the air, with the same result.

None of those three stop the clicking, which is the point. The module has no way to know where its output went, so the sound continues to be reassuring while the burner does nothing useful with it.

When the spark is fine and nothing catches

Suppose the spark is crisp, aimed properly, and the cap is sitting where it should be. Then the question changes: is there fuel at all? Light something else in the house that runs on gas. Find the isolation valve serving the range and confirm which way it is turned, since it gets shut for a wash-down or a delivery and stays shut. Ask the household whether a plumber has been in, whether the meter was exchanged, or whether crews have been working in the road.

Do not attempt to answer any of that by smell. A negative result proves nothing at all, and producing a positive one means deliberately allowing fuel to build up in an enclosed kitchen. Test with an appliance that lights instead, and let a flame somewhere else in the house give you the answer.

Past the isolation valve, the fuel path stops being homeowner territory. Everything downstream of it — the knob valve, the manifold, the orifices, the regulator — is inside the appliance, is set rather than adjusted, and cannot be judged by how a flame happens to look. The burner that lights with a thump

Here is what the thump actually is. In the seconds between the knob opening and the flame appearing, the burner is doing exactly what it was told: releasing fuel. None of it is burning. It spreads across the head, under the cap, and into the air immediately above the cooktop. When the spark finally finds a mixture that will light, the whole accumulated pocket goes at once instead of a steady stream burning at the ports. That is the flat sound, that is the brief pressure you feel, and that is why the burner sometimes lights with a visible flash beyond the rim.

That is also why delayed ignition outranks a burner that never lights. A dead burner is self-limiting — it is obvious, it gets abandoned, and after a day nobody uses it. A burner that lights on the fourth click still produces dinner, so it stays in service through an entire winter while the pause grows and the pocket gets bigger. The version people put up with is the version that deserves the call.

The useful checks are the mechanical ones already covered: cap register, ports fouled beside the electrode, an electrode standing off too far so the spark reaches a lightable mixture later than it should. What is not worth investigating is the module — it delivered on cue every time, and exchanging it achieves nothing at all. The spark module and the switches behind the knobs

The module is a small high-voltage supply with a simple brief. A switch behind each knob closes as the gas opens, the module answers by pulsing the electrodes, and it stops when that switch releases. On many ranges all the electrodes fire together, which is why one knob starts the whole row.

So clicking that never stops means the module was never told to stand down. Usually a switch has failed to reopen: contacts worn past the point of separating, or a sugary spill that found its way down the shaft and set solid. Occasionally moisture bridges something and manufactures a request nobody made. It is a small failure with an intolerable noise, and it will not resolve itself.

That is the handover point. Knobs, switches and module all sit behind the front panel, inches from a live manifold, in an appliance carrying mains voltage. No amount of irritating ticking justifies opening that up on a Sunday. Cut the power at the breaker to silence it and book the visit.

What is worth a call

The gas rule again, because it is the only one that matters more than convenience: a smell that will not clear means leaving and calling the utility. Everything else on this page waits until that is settled.

Three symptoms end the homeowner stage. Lighting with a thump, for the reasons set out above. Continuous sparking with the knobs off. And a burner that catches, holds for a moment and then dies, which moves the enquiry onto the flame-sensing and valve side rather than ignition.

A technician settles what the kitchen cannot: whether gas is present at working pressure rather than merely present, whether the module holds output under load or only makes a convincing sound, and whether that one switch opens cleanly. Those are instrument readings, and they separate a repair from a run of guesses.

I can smell gas. What should I do?

Get everybody out of the house first, then ring the gas utility from outside — a mobile on the pavement, not the phone in the kitchen. Leave lights and switches alone on your way out, and do not go looking for the source. The utility makes the property safe; only after that has happened does anyone look at the appliance. A repair firm is the second call, never the first.

It started right after I cleaned the range. Why?

Three reasons, all of them common. Water is still sitting inside the burner head and around the ceramic at the base of the electrode where no towel reaches, and it suppresses ignition until it has gone. A cap has gone back slightly out of register, or been swapped with one from a different position. Or scouring residue has settled into the ports. Dry everything thoroughly and reseat the caps before assuming a part has failed.

The burner keeps clicking even with every knob off.

That is a stuck request rather than a failing igniter. The module pulses for as long as a knob switch reports that gas has been opened, so constant ticking means one of those switches is not returning to rest — worn contacts, or something spilled behind the knob that has hardened. Cut the power at the breaker to stop it, because leaving it pulsing for days is hard on the electrodes and their leads.
